Waking Up ‘Human’ in 2045, Guest Article for The Alan Turing Institute

October 31, 2018

This article by Yolanda Lannquist and Arohi Jain in The Alan Turing Institute’s blog series on the Future of Work questions the role of humanity in the digital age. Since the agricultural revolution when humans settled into sedentary life, employment has defined one’s identity, aspiration and role in society. Occupations, from farm labourers to priests, defined social classes in all geographies. Advances in AI and robotics may pave the way for automation of labor particularly for routine and predictable tasks – putting into question the relevance of employment in human life. This departure from the past leads society to confront a pertinent question: what is the role of humans in a post-work world? How will our identities and roles in society change as professional work becomes less ubiquitous? How will we spend our time and find purpose?
