The IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems

May 28, 2018

The Future Society is actively involved in several committees, including chairmanship of the Law Committee. In addition to contributing to the draft of the first and second editions of the IEEE Global Initiative’s report, we have been leveraging our network and convening power to raise awareness about the IEEE’s work and collect stakeholders’ input.

The Future Society, AI Initiative has been a member of the IEEE-SA Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems since its launch in 2016. The IEEE Global Initiative’s mission is, “to ensure every stakeholder involved in the design and development of autonomous and intelligent systems is educated, trained, and empowered to prioritize ethical considerations so that these technologies are advanced for the benefit of humanity.” The Future Society and its various initiatives (AI Initiative; Law & Society Initiative) is represented on several Committees including General Principles, Law, Policy, and Economics. As a result, we have been actively involved in the co-creation of the various editions of Ethically Aligned Design and their dissemination via conferences and Oped (e.g. Four Principles for the Trustworthy Adoption of AI in Legal Systems published by Bloomberg in March 2019).

Policy for Artificial Intelligence: A Global Perspective
In Policy for Artificial Intelligence: A Global Perspective, Konstantinos Karachalios (Managing Director, IEEE-SA; Member of IEEE Management Council), Arisa Ema (Assistant Professor at the University of Tokyo and Visiting Researcher at the RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project), and Nicolas Miailhe (Co-Founder and President, The Future Society, Senior Visiting Fellow, Program on Science Technology and Society at Harvard Kennedy School and member), discuss the IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Autonomous Systems.

Policy for Artificial Intelligence: Ethics and Inclusion for the Algorithmic Age
This webinar is the first in a series of three online events on Policy for Artificial Intelligence. This global Online Civic Debate is a 6-month campaign using massive collective intelligence to identify ideas and solutions for the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on society. Leveraging this platform would allow us to present actionable policy tools to government and decision-makers.

Ethically Aligned Design, First Edition (EAD1e) is a comprehensive body of work that distills the consensus of its vast community of global creators into a set of high-level ethical principles, key issues, and practical recommendations. EAD1e is an in-depth seminal work, a one-of-a-kind treatise, intended not only to inform a broader public but also to inspire its audience and readership of academics, engineers, policymakers, and manufacturers of autonomous and intelligent systems (A/IS) to take action.
