Launch of Global Online Course on Artificial Intelligence and the Rule of Law

December 7, 2021

The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Rule of Law engages judicial operators in a global and timely discussion around AI’s application and impact on the rule of law.

Structured around six introductory modules, participants will have the opportunity to learn about:

  1. Why Digital Transformation and AI Matter for Justice Systems
  2. AI Adoption Across Justice Systems
  3. The Rise of Online Courts
  4. Algorithmic Bias and its Implications for Judicial Decision Making
  5. Safeguarding Human Rights in the Age of AI
  6. AI Ethics & Governance Concerning Judicial Operators

The course is developed by UNESCO and The Future Society, with the support of Cetic.br|NIC.br, the National Judicial College, and IEEE SA. It was made possible by the kind contributions of the UNESCO Multi Donor Programme on Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists (MDP) and the Open Society Foundations.

The course was formally launched at the 2021 Edition of The Athens Roundtable, the premier international, multi-stakeholder gathering on artificial intelligence, legal systems and functions, regulatory compliance, and the rule of law.

Marielza Oliveira, Director in UNESCO’s Communications and Information Sector, said: “The impact of AI on society and human rights can only be addressed with a collaborative effort. The online course on AI and the Rule of Law is an effort in this direction, with 21 speakers from 14 countries sharing their unique knowledge and experience.”

Nicolas Miailhe, President and Founder of The Future Society (TFS), said: “The course aims to build capacity across judicial stakeholders around the world so they can be better equipped to navigate AI’s opportunities as well as manage the risks. This is crucial for the responsible adoption of AI.”

Content will be available in English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Arabic and Portuguese.

Registration and more information can be found at: https://www.judges.org/ai-rol

Course commencement is planned for March 2022.
