Employment Status: Contractor, 1-year renewable contract

Location: Remote work between Western Americas (UTC-8) to Eastern Africa/Europe (UTC+2) time zones. Note that TFS is unable to support visa applications at this time.

Position Summary: 

The Future Society (TFS) is looking for a highly motivated teammate with 2+ years of relevant work experience and a broad skillset to help us in our artificial intelligence (AI) governance project development and community-building activities. This role supports senior teammates in analyzing the AI governance landscape, identifying opportunities for high-impact AI governance initiatives, and mobilizing a community of stakeholders around these initiatives. In this role, you will be responsible for leading various workstreams contributing to our mission, under the supervision of a Senior Project Associate. This role will play an essential part in helping us achieve our mission of aligning AI through better governance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct AI policy research and landscape analysis (e.g. desk research, attend international AI policy conferences, collective intelligence workshops with multi-stakeholder AI technical and policy experts) to identify gaps and opportunities for high-impact AI governance initiatives
  • Help to scope and design AI governance initiatives, including horizon scanning and impact planning exercises
  • Map key stakeholders (i.e. international organizations, companies, nonprofits, academia, policymakers) for the selected AI governance initiatives
  • Help manage communities of stakeholders by organizing workshops, working groups, events and conferences (including managing contacts & invitations, content, reports) and utilizing customer relationship management (CRM) software 
  • Support managers to build coalitions of stakeholders to advocate for and support implementation of the selected initiatives to drive impact.
  • Leverage relevant organizational systems and team-wide processes enabling productive teamwork and maintain top notch communications with the rest of the team for collective intelligence 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience (or PhD equivalent), for example in government, think-tanks, law firms, consulting, digital economy, technology, multilateral organizations, etc.

  • Skills
    • Professional working proficiency in English 
    • Experience or strong interest in coordinating and convening stakeholders towards community building, including event organization
    • Skills in software for project management, customer relationship management and knowledge management are preferred but not required.
    • Experience in horizon scanning, conducting impact assessments, monitoring & evaluation are preferred but not required. 
    • Written communication skills, including experience drafting policy documents, grant and project proposals, conducting policy research and analysis
    • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge
    • Undergraduate degree, graduate or doctoral degrees 
    • Knowledge of AI governance/policy and technology trends, landscape and stakeholders (i.e. international organizations, companies, nonprofits, academia, policymakers)
    • Basic technical understanding of AI/machine learning. Technical and/or policy knowledge of other emerging technologies and cybersecurity are a bonus.
