Position Summary:

The Future Society (TFS) is looking for a highly motivated teammate with 7+ years of experience relevant to developing, advocating for, and implementing artificial intelligence (AI) policy and governance mechanisms in the US and internationally. These can range from laws and regulation to voluntary frameworks (standards, industry practices, benchmarks, etc.). This role involves monitoring the US and global AI governance landscape, designing and leading high-impact AI policy recommendations, and mobilizing a community of stakeholders to advocate for them.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead policy strategy and engagement in the US, including developing, managing and advocating for TFS’s policy recommendations, preparing and disseminating AI policy memos and other outputs, and building and managing relationships with policymakers, civil society groups, and other relevant actors.
  • Manage TFS’s portfolio of activities in the US, including a small team of Senior Associates, Associates, and Analysts.
  • Support TFS’s international AI governance activities, including advisory, advocacy, international coordination, and policy research.
  • Convene and manage communities of relevant stakeholders by organizing and participating in workshops, working groups, joint reports, events and conferences (including managing contacts & invitations, content, and reports).
  • Map and build a diverse coalition of stakeholders to advocate for and support implementation of our policy positions.
  • Represent TFS at AI policy forums and workshops with multi-stakeholder AI technical and policy experts.
  • Leverage internal IT systems and team-wide processes enabling productive teamwork and communications.
  • Support the organizations’ operational needs such as fundraising, grant proposals, strategic communications, and impact planning and assessments.
  • Contribute to team-wide organizational strategy discussions.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • 7+ years of full-time work experience (or PhD equivalent) relevant for AI policy in government, research institutes/think tanks, law firms, consulting firms, AI labs, multilateral, and/or civil society organizations.
  • Experience in project management, including managing junior colleagues, and collaborating with external partners and stakeholders.
  • Strong policy research and analysis skills, demonstrated by experiences such as tracking and drafting policy memos, and providing legislative or government feedback.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to collaborate and represent TFS with high-level international stakeholders, including leading or participating in workshops, conferences, and presentations.
  • Experience or interest in coordinating and convening stakeholders towards community building, including event organization.
  • Experience conducting impact planning and assessments.
  • Full professional working proficiency in English including excellent written communication.


  • Undergraduate, Master’s or doctoral degree(s) in public policy, economics, technology policy, law, computer science or engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge about AI policy in the United States (federal and/or state levels), regulatory initiatives and processes, technology trends, institutional landscape and actors.
  • Basic technical understanding of AI including general-purpose AI systems with emergent capabilities.

  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally and work with international and diverse teammates and stakeholders.
