A Framework for Planning, Developing and Deploying Artificial Intelligence in Intergovernmental Organizations (AIGO)

January 5, 2019

While most intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) are at the advent of experimenting with AI, these endeavors are bound to intensify, as the technology holds the potential to improve insight generation, enable faster and larger-scale evidence-based decision making, and optimize output delivery processes.

To help IGO innovators progress in this area, this paper details the value proposition of AI for IGOs and proposes a comprehensive framework to plan, develop, and deploy AI solutions across organizations. It provides a detailed, multi-step roadmap for effective implementation and equips decision-makers with the practical tools to identify and prioritize use cases.

A comprehensive database of AI case studies distills insights from more than a dozen interviews with recognized thought leaders applying AI in IGOs, the private sector, and government, to demonstrate how IGOs may leverage AI to solve real, concrete issues in delivering on their mission. Moreover, a brief prospect is given on how IGOs may act as multipliers: building on strong internal capabilities and systematic, system-wide utilization of AI, their global presence predestines them to assist member countries in developing national AI capacities.
