Two major trends can be distinguished in the realm of AI & Education: on the one hand, there is implementing AI solutions to improve education, and on the other hand, there is transforming educational models and systems for a world in which AI systems are becoming increasingly impactful. Within each of these dimensions, there is a list of questions stakeholders worldwide are aiming to unpack. How has the global pandemic impacted the speed AI systems are deployed in education? What are the consequences of deploying AI in education? What skills should we prioritize in our national education systems? How do we update how people learn for the twenty-first century?

On the 18th of June, The Future Society addressed these questions at a multi-stakeholder webinar titled, ‘Artificial Intelligence and Education, Best Practices and Policy Recommendations’, and organized in collaboration with ICESCO, Mila and Algora Lab.

The purpose of this webinar was to raise awareness among participants on “AI for education” and “Education for AI”, discuss best practices across the world, and share policy recommendations to build a fair, sustainable and creative education model. The webinar was moderated by Sacha Alanoca, Senior AI Policy Researcher at The Future Society, and Pauline Noiseau, Coordinator at Algora Lab. An interdisciplinary and prestigious list of panelists were hosted, among which Salim M. AlMalik , Director General at ICESCO, Andreas Schleicher , OECD Director for the Directorate of Education and Skills, Dr. Driss Ouaouicha, Minister Delegate in charge of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Kingdom of Morocco.

With over 10K views, we can say that we are very proud of the results. The outreach is especially important in this context as the webinar is embedded within the initiative of the ‘AI Civic Forum’ (AICF). The AICF is an initiative kickstarted by The Future Society and Algora Lab to include, and thus empower, citizens in AI development. In the words of Niki Iliadis, Senior AI Policy Researcher at The Future Society (developing the initiative) and also panelist in the webinar, involving citizens in shaping the future of AI technology is crucial to have meaningful public engagement.
