The Future Society is Honored to Facilitate the Second Annual Global Governance of AI Roundtable in Dubai

H.E. Omar bin Sultan Al Olama’s groundbreaking convening at the World Government Summit demonstrates important progress toward global coordination on AI governance and ethics

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates–Artificial intelligence (AI) experts, business leaders, and government officials from over thirty countries gathered in Dubai to participate in the second annual Global Governance of AI Roundtable (GGAR), a full-day convening of high-level working groups whose goal is to progress and coordinate burgeoning efforts to establish processes, principles and norms for governing the rise of AI.

As part of the World Government Summit AI Forum, the GGAR will comprise more than 200 experts and practitioners. Representations include delegates from the OECD’s AI Expert Group (AIGO), UNESCO’s World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology, the IEEE Standards Association’s Global Initiative on Ethically Aligned Design of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems, the Council on Extended Intelligence, and the Global Data Commons International Task Force. This joint enterprise reflects a shared interest to realize the potential that AI offers to our collective future while mitigating its risks.

Nicolas Miailhe, President of The Future Society, said, “the AI Roundtable has more than doubled in size this year, demonstrating the accelerating momentum towards international efforts to govern the rise of AI more effectively and wisely. GGAR acts as a unique collective intelligence exercise and inclusive multi-stakeholder discussion platform that serves as a precursor to establishing a much needed international organization akin to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). We and our partners have worked hard to build a process that is inclusive of viewpoints from different geographies, industries, sectors and academic disciplines. Given the systemic complexity, velocity and uncertainty surrounding the AI revolution, such diversity is crucial to forge legitimate international processes, principles and norms”.

Simon Mueller, Director of the AI Initiative at The Future Society, said: “We thank H.E. Omar bin Sultan Al Olama and his ministry, for their vision and leadership in harnessing the World Government Summit as a focal point to bring together some of the smartest minds working toward good governance of AI.”

Arohi Jain, Head of Research & Advisory at The Future Society, added: “The Future Society works hard to improve coordination between the growing set of new AI governance efforts around the world. We are thrilled to have had the chance to support the UAE in ensuring that the dialogue harnesses best practices in collective intelligence, policy research and community building.”
